Chauncey Gardner-Johnson is a player that New Orleans Saints fans loved to watch play for quite some time. While his time in black and gold was cut short in 2022 with a trade to the Philadelphia Eagles, the player coined “CGJ” was always appreciated for his infectious spirit and effort while with the Saints. Now, he’s making plays for the Chicago Bears under a well-known former Saints coach.

Former Saints fan favorite pays respect to Demario Davis with celebration

After recording a sack against the New York Giants, C.J. Gardner-Johnson seemingly paid homage to Saints star linebacker Demario Davis. He rolled out Davis’ big play celebration that he’s been doing for quite some time.

Gardner-Johnson spent time alongside Davis while in New Orleans, and there is no doubt that the veteran LB had an impact on his development from both an emotional and physical side of the game.

The fiery defensive back hasn’t stopped working hard to get on the field, and injuries have allowed the now Bears defender to hit the field more often. Gardner-Johnson began the season with the Houston Texans, but that tenure did not last long.

After his release, he joined the Baltimore Ravens practice squad, but a lack of a route to playing time led him to moving on from that AFC foe as well. Creating a reunion with Dennis Allen always made sense, and the Bears front office made that happen.

C.J. Gardner-Johnson dominates in early action with Bears

I discussed CGJ’s role with Chicago’s defense under Dennis Allen with Bears beat writer Kole Noble. His presence has been clear and obvious for anyone watching, and the unit is feeling the energy from the veteran defensive back.

“C.J. Gardner-Johnson has been a welcome addition to the Bears defense and I honestly can’t think of a more impactful in-signing general manager Ryan Poles has made for this team. That being said, this addition had more to do with head coach Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Dennis Allen making the call than the team’s top front office executive.

After placing Kyler Gordon on the injured reserve, Johnson and Allen made the swift decision to bring Gardner-Johnson in for a visit and loved everything he stood for as a player and as a person. There was obvious risk involved with signing him from a locker room standpoint that was considered but he’s absolutely been a perfect fit in the building the last two weeks.

Making stellar plays and winning games certainly has something to do with that. Yet, Gardner-Johnson breathes the same energy Allen has instilled into the rest of the defense. He’s constantly all over the football and the chess-piece Allen needed to elevate his scheme after losing Gordon. And once Gordon’s back in a few weeks, the Bears will have two versatile missiles to deploy in a variety of different ways against opposing offenses.” — Kole Noble, A to Z Sports

There is no doubt that Gardner-Johnson has started to rekindle his playing career after some frustrating recent stops elsewhere around the league. Plenty of Saints fans are probably rooting for him still.
