New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr has completed his NFL career. He announced his retirement from the league this past weekend, as he prioritizes his health going forward. Carr has been dealing with a notable shoulder injury since last season.
With the news being unveiled, the NFL world has plenty of takes on the veteran QB's choice and the future in New Orleans at the position.
Saints fan goes viral for reaction to Derek Carr news
There's been plenty of social media stir following the retirement of Carr. Even on the streets locally, there is a sense of hope for the future after his announcement to hang up his cleats.
OF course, this fan also requested that the team move on from general manager Mickey Loomis next. That's not happening this offseason, and it would be a bit surprising to see it occur anytime soon, considering his relationship with ownership during a lengthy tenure.
This particular Saints supporter may have to only settle for the new beginning at quarterback.
New Orleans got a bit lucky with the retirement
Carr's decision was a massive stepping stone for the Saints, both this offseason and for the long-term future. They have reason to thank him for stepping away due to his medical reasoning, and he certainly could have punished them more in ways, regarding his retirement process.
And with $30 million added to this year's cap and around $15 million added to next year's (assuming Carr's retirement papers are filed after June 1), along with much clearer vision and direction at the position, it's easy to see why this is a good deal for the Saints.
By retiring, all the money was put in control of the team. It's a huge relief for the Saints, and Carr being allowed to keep his roster bonus is a gesture of good faith.
The timing of Carr's retirement is also important here. When players are released from a club following June 1, or when the club designates a release to happen post-June 1, the salary cap hit of the transaction can be split between the current league year and the following league year.
No matter what – the unknown is an exciting ideal for New Orleans and its fans right now. They are ready for a new chapter of Saints football, and hiring Kellen Moore was a legitimate step in that direction.
Now, we will see if the Saints choose to hit a bit of a reset button, or somehow, choose to go down another path that does not make them younger in 2026, albeit after a potentially tough 2025 season.
