Undrafted free agency is always valuable to the New Orleans Saints. They are normally aggressive and attack needs around their roster. The Saints consistently land at least one UDFA that makes the roster the following season. Add former Slippery Rock wide receiver Kyle Sheets to that list.
The Saints were the first to reach out to Sheets less than an hour after the draft concluded on Saturday.
It's clear that Sheets values the culture around a team that he joins. With New Orleans, he will immediately be family once he gets around the organization.
Also, the Saints certainly felt strong about the former D2 receiver. They were in contact nearly right after the draft finished and gave him a strong offer to make sure they landed the wideout.
Sheets caught 76 passes for 1,186 yards with 17 touchdowns in 2023. He finished the season ranked third in Division II football in touchdown catches and sixth in receiving yards.
The 2023 season marked a career year for Sheets, who was named to each of the five All-America teams at the Division II level, including a first team All-America nod by both the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and the Associated Press (AP). He was also named to first team All-Region honors in Super Region One and first team All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference honors.
At 6'4, Sheets projects as the size of wideout that the Saints have been looking for this offseason.
Expect him to battle with 5th-round pick Bub Means for a roster spot as a depth target with size. Both show impressive flashes of downfield catch ability and unique skill at making grabs with minimal separation.
We will see how Sheets performs over the next few months during different levels of training camp and practice.
