The New Orleans Saints may not target a big trade before the NFL's trade deadline, looming in the near distance. That being said, adding some depth through waivers for their defensive line could make sense for the black and gold.

Former second-round pick becomes available

The Giants waived edge rusher Carlos "Boogie" Basham. The Buffalo Bills selected him 61st overall in the 2021 NFL Draft.

New York traded for Basham ahead of the 2023 season for defensive line depth. Off the edge, they wanted a bit more firepower, but Basham never made quite the impact that the Giants hoped for when they made the deal.

The young pass rusher totaled eleven tackles in thirteen games for the Giants last season. Basham had 37 tackles and 4.5 sacks in 23 regular season games for the Bills. His impact was felt a bit more in their defensive scheme.

For the Saints, their defensive line has been one of the worst in the NFC this season. Their veterans have not produced, and they are not finishing the job in the backfield when it comes to getting to the passer.

Basham hasn't gotten off to a fast start during his first few seasons in the league, but he could get more opportunity if he lands in New Orleans.

Isaiah Foskey has been a complete bust, while Payton Turner still has not found consistency as a former first round pick for the Saints, either.

Off the edge, Carl Granderson and Chase Young headline the group, but neither have made enough plays in 2024. Not to mention, the Saints defensive line is actually one of their healthiest groups this season.

If the injury luck sways in the other direction for that piece of the roster during the next few weeks, Basham would be improved depth compared to some other options out there or currently on the Saints depth chart. Regardless, he may be on their radar after the Giants made him available early this week.

The Saints will play the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 8, looking to break a five-game losing skid.
