The New Orleans Saints kept Dennis Allen for another year. Whether you agree with that choice or not, the pressure is now on high for him and the front office. With a new offensive staff, Allen is confident in the changes the team made under him to find more consistency in 2024. They did not get the job done in 2023 but are ready to bounce back.
Allen talked to Rich Eisen regarding the Saints' selection of quarterback Spencer Rattler in the 2024 NFL Draft, too.
Why did the Saints like Spencer Rattler over other rookie QBs in the 2024 draft class?
Early QBs went off the board quickly
Allen was clearly ecstatic that the second tier of quarterbacks (J.J. McCarthy, Michael Penix Jr., and Bo Nix) all went ahead of their 14th overall selection. They were not interested in taking those players in round one.
Rather, they knew they wanted to address their offensive line. Those early QB picks allowed them to get one of their favorite OL prospects in the class in Taliese Fuaga. Now, he projects to start at OT for them in year one.
Rattler graded in Round 2/3 for Saints
Not to mention, Rattler was a value selection in round five. Not many draft analysts thought he would make it out of day two, and the Saints shared that thought process. They had a day two grade on him and were excited to see him on the board in round five.
Allen also noted that Rattler's job is to come in and compete. There is no tnearly as much pressure on him with Derek Carr still in the building as the cemented starter, but the staff is still pushing Rattler to be his best. They want to see improvement, and that should surprise no one.
The Saints coach also noted that the situation is a good one for a rookie QB because he can learn from a veteran like Carr.
Not to mention, Taysom Hill and Jake Haener are also two other unique perspectives with NFL QB experience that Rattler can gain knowledge from as he progresses in his rookie year and potentially beyond.
Overall, the Saints were thankful to grab Rattler on day three of the draft. Allen's reasoning makes plenty of sense, too.
