The New Orleans Saints suffered a significant injury in their final preseason game. Rookie offensive tackle Trevor Penning injured his foot. He was carted off the field. Head Coach Dennis Allen made his initial comments on the injury earlier today.
Allen did not want to go too in depth with the injury. Regardless, reports are pointing to a torn ligament in his foot that needs surgery. The timetable is not known as of yet, and we may not hear about that until after the surgery.
Penning wasn't projected to be a starter for the Saints when the season begins. That being said, his development throughout the offseason was impressive. Players around the team marveled at his run blocking, especially. Coaches have been working to improve his pass-blocking as well.
The Saints really needed him to get reps throughout practice in the regular season. Now, he will have to miss out on that important development time in order to recover.
Expect James Hurst to start at the tackle spot opposite of Ryan Ramczyk for the Saints. Hopefully, Penning can come back later in the season to provide depth along the offensive line.
