The New Orleans Saints are in a bit of a hole after starting the season 2-5. They didn't really start the season the way they would have liked and have been devasted by injuries.
But, even with the poor start, there is still a sliver of hope that this team can make a run for the playoffs. Why? Well, the division is about as bad as it has been for quite some time. The Saints are 2-5, and yet they are 1.5 games out of first place.
Oh, and, there is hope because head coach Dennis Allen has been in this same exact situation before. It's been done before, so why would he think they can't do it?
"Well, I told the team that I have been in this position before," Allen said. "We were in the same position I believe it was back in 2011 with Denver, and if I'm not mistaken our record was 2-5 at the time and, we ended up reeling in all six wins in a row and got our record to 8-5 and ended up making the playoffs and winning a playoff game.
"So I think the 49ers were in a similar situation last year, they played in the NFC Championship game. So, I know it can be done, it really just gets to us playing good football and playing complementary football on both sides of the ball."
Dennis Allen was the defensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos in 2011, and that team did in fact start 2-5 and finish 8-8 with a playoff win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. If we are being honest, that team wasn't great.
Fully healthy, I think the Saints are a much more complete team than that one. But, then again, the Saints don't have the greatest quarterback of all time on their team as the Broncos did in Tim Tebow, so maybe not.
Allen is right though that it can be done. The 49ers did something very similar last season. When this team gets healthy again, I think we will see it starting to shape into that.
