The offense for the New Orleans Saints is dealing with plenty of changes. They must decide a starting quarterback. Kellen Moore is the new coach – with a new offensive staff around the roster. The offensive line has a couple of key, fresh faces.

The running back position may look similar to a season ago, but one returning player has a new sense of opportunity and some belief from the coaching staff that he may not be used to so far in his playing career in the pros.

Kendre Miller emerges as clear RB2 for Kellen Moore

The backup RB spot for the Saints seemed to be up for grabs entering the season. With a notable training camp and some tackle-breaking plays in the preseason, Kendre Miller has seemingly taken that job with a clarity that many didn’t expect. Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Cam Akers, and a couple other options had opportunities, but Miller is the only one behind Alvin Kamara who isn’t on the roster bubble.

Head coach Kellen Moore had a positive outlook on Miller’s performance this offseason and potential for the future. His comments were a breath of fresh air for Miller, who dealt with plenty of public negativity from former HC Dennis Allen.

“Kendre’s had a really steady entire offseason, I thought he’s done a phenomenal job … He runs hard, he’s a physical player, we like what we’re seeing.” — Kellen Moore on Kendre Miller

Miller, most notably potentially, has stayed healthy this offseason. That was a hurdle he could not muster over the course of his first couple of years with the team and in the NFL. After a multitude of injuries, he looks healthy on the field, and that’s paying off big time with his new head coach.

The running back looked explosive at times in the preseason and had a knack for getting extra yards on carries, even when there wasn’t anything there due to the offensive line struggles. Miller’s pass blocking must continue to develop, but he has even taken a step forward there – cementing his spot on the depth chart most likely.

Luckily, there isn’t a ton of pressure involved for the young RB. Kamara is a workhorse who has proven to carry a large workload. Miller just must provide a valuable baseline for a backup at running back, and there’s a lot of faith in him around the team now.
