Entering their Week 8 game against the Los Angeles Chargers, the narrative was positive regarding the New Orleans Saints' injury situation. They were getting key contributors back, like Taysom Hill, Cesar Ruiz, Pete Werner, and Chris Olave.
Those additions did not make enough of a difference.
Werner made some impactful plays in the first quarter, and Hill helped to get a safety on a botched punt attempt to put the Saints' only points on the board outside of two field goals. Olave had a couple moments, but overall, New Orleans came up short.
After the game, they probably feel a bit worse about their injury luck because of some new issues that popped up against the Chargers. Check out which players are dealing with new ailments following the Week 8 loss.
More Saints injuries in Week 8
- Marshon Lattimore (hamstring)
- Kendre Miller (hamstring)
- Pete Werner
- Juwan Johnson (concussion)
- Bub Means (ankle)
- Rico Payton
Saints head coach Dennis Allen did not have many updates on any of these injuries after the game. Expect more updates to come on them this week from the team's practice reports.
Miller's hamstring issue is to the other hamstring than the one that held him out for the beginning of the season. Lattimore is dealing with a re-aggravation of the hamstring issue that kicked up for him last week against the Denver Broncos.
Chris Olave left the game early to be evaluated for a concussion from a hard hit, but he returned to the game.
Concerning trend?
General manager Mickey Loomis discussed the long list of Saints injuries this past week.
"All iniuries are not equal in the sense that, you know, if you have one of your starting players, one of your best players get hurt, that's different than having a rookie undrafted free agent…
It's just different in terms of the impact on your team and part of the unfortunate circumstances for us is that we've got a lot of starters, contributing players, really good players who have missed time, and the good news is a lot of those guys will be back during the course of this season, and so we've got to find ways to be competitive and win games while we're waiting for those reinforcmements to get back."
— Saints GM Mickey Loomis
Even Loomis, a leader in the front office, is scratching his head due to all of the ailments for Saints players recently.
Injuries can be unlucky, certainly, but so many soft tissue problems also point to legitimate training or health concerns for the franchise. Those are often not coincidental when they pile up. Part of Loomis' job is to find people that can help with that sort of problem, too.
There is no doubt that the laundry list of injured players between this season and last for New Orleans is a major concern for them. They have not been able to find the pulse of those problems, though.
