Saints release RB Jamaal Williams
The Saints have released RB Jamaal Williams. The move saves them $1.59 million in 2025 cap space. Williams was scheduled to count for $3.93 million against their salary cap in 2025.
In 27 games with the Saints, Williams totaled only 470 rushing yards and averaged a measly 3.1 yards per carry
His tenure in New Orleans just never seemed to mesh on the football field. They hoped that his 17-touchdown season in 2022 would prove to be a consistent force for them.
That never was the case. Williams played just 20% of the snaps for New Orleans' offense in 2024.
Williams' role was limited behind Alvin Kamara and Taysom Hill in the backfield. Even when he did play, Williams seemed to lack explosiveness and did not provide the powerful boost in the red zone that New Orleans expected when they inked the veteran RB to a deal.
That being said, Williams was an emotional leader in the locker room and held a strong relationship with many experienced pieces on the roster. They'll have to replace his infectious personality and leadership.
Williams' release is the first of many cuts that New Orleans will have to manage in order to become cap compliant. We'll see who gives the veteran RB his next opportunity to be a depth option for their backfield.
I fully expect the Saints to add more talent at the running back position either through the NFL Draft or free agency (maybe both). They need more potential and talent behind Alvin Kamara, and Kendre Miller has struggled with injuries since he was drafted by New Orleans.

Kellen Moore has built a ton of his staff so far for the New Orleans Saints. He's got both of his coordinators in Doug Nussmeier (OC) and Brandon Staley (DC). One potential piece to their coaching staff on offense won't be in New Orleans next season, though. He garnered a lot of interest this offseason […]
