Saints HC Kellen Moore reveals key update on Alvin Kamara’s future amid retirement speculation
What is next for the veteran RB?
Travis Etienne joined the New Orleans Saints backfield during free agency this offseason, and there’s no lack of enthusiasm in his skillset from head coach Kellen Moore. He has raved about him since his arrival.
With that move, questions jumped to the front page regarding Alvin Kamara’s future. New Orleans made a contract adjustment with him that could open the door a bit more to a trade or retirement potentially, but the latest comments from the Saints head coach don’t indicate he’s done with his long-time squad.
Kellen Moore is planning to have Alvin Kamara next season
According to Moore, the Saints plan to have veteran running back Alvin Kamara in the mix next season for their offense. He’s on the roster right now, and the staff likes the potential of the current group of RBs along the roster, both young and experienced.
Check out Moore’s discussion on the running back position during the current league meetings below.
“We love Alvin. He means the world to all of us,” Moore said. “This is a full offseason process… he’s in that room and you can find roles for all of those different types of guys.”
The Saints head coach went on to mention that Etienne and Kamara do have similar play styles, but that doesn’t rule out having both on the roster and contributing in 2026. Moore is excited about the talent and depth of the current running back room.
A potential curveball for other teams
At the same time, this could all be a smoke show from Moore to help convince teams that running back is not a major focus for the team during the 2026 NFL Draft.
Plenty of mocks had the Saints picking Notre Dame RB Jeremiyah Love at eighth overall before the Etienne addition during free agency. Are they still a landing spot if he gets to them? Could New Orleans target a young option on day two of the draft? Only time will tell.
That being said, if Moore sticks to these statements, Kamara will suit up in black and gold next season rather than get traded or hang up his cleats for now.
