The New Orleans Saints are 2-7 after nine games in the 2024 regular season. Darren Rizzi is their new head coach for now, and he has already made some notable changes.
Derek Carr is the team's starter, but the future is unknown. With their struggles, a top pick in the 2025 NFL Draft is on the table.
As of now, the Saints have the third overall pick in next year's draft. That will change on a weekly basis, but they are only behind the Jacksonville Jaguars and New England Patriots at the moment. The latest injury news for the Jags is intriguing for New Orleans.
Trevor Lawrence injury
The Jaguars starting quarterback is unlikely to play in Week 10, according to Ian Rapoport. He is dealing with a shoulder injury, and surgery is a possibility. If he misses time, Mac Jones would enter as the starter in Jacksonville.
Pederson's comments came on the same day the Jaguars reunited with backup quarterback C.J. Beathard, who was signed off the Miami Dolphins' practice squad. Beathard spent the previous three seasons as Lawrence's No. 2, only to be released as part of final roster cuts in August. Should Lawrence be sidelined for Sunday's game, former New England Patriots starter Mac Jones would be in line to fill in as Jacksonville's No. 1, with Beathard back in the backup spot. — CBS Sports
Without Lawrence, Jacksonville's offense takes another hit.
They already lost Christian Kirk at receiver for the season. Now, their young starting QB could miss noteworthy time as they try to get back on track. Their offensive line has dealt with some injuries this year, too.
Lawrence has had his flaws in 2024, but there is no doubt that he is the best option in the QB room for the Jaguars this season.
Mounting losses could make it more difficult for the Saints to secure a pick in the top five of next year's draft. Of course, New Orleans' goal is to turn this season around, but that is all but impossible at this point.
