In New Orleans Saints lore, linebacker Rickey Jackson reigns supreme on the defensive side of the ball. Jackson was one of the best linebackers of his era and a key cog in the Saints defense for over a decade. He was a leader on and off the field. Now, he just took another step in his personal life that he believes is major.
Jackson just graduated from the University of Pittsburgh, 42 years after leaving the university.
He graduated with a degree in social sciences from the College of General Studies at on April 30th. Jackson explained why he chose to go back to finish his degree.
“I was so close to it that it made no sense to not get it… My mother would’ve loved it, my father wanted me to get it. I know they’d be proud of me…This is something I achieved personally on my own, so I’d put it right up with that… A lot of ex-football players, they want to go back and finish. I got a lot of buddies. They see what I did. They want to go back now and get their degrees. All of them were pretty close. Now, a lot of them are going back.”
It is yet another accomplishment to add to the long list for the Saints legend. Jackson totaled 128 career sacks and eight interceptions in 227 career NFL games. He is also a Pro Football Hall of Famer.
