The quarterback position decides your fate in the NFL in nearly every occasion. That is the simple truth of today's game. For the New Orleans Saints, they have plenty to figure out over the next handful of months, before the start of the regular season.

Loomis says Carr will start if healthy

According to Saints general manager Mickey Loomis, Derek Carr will start at quarterback for the Saints this season if he is healthy enough to play.

This whole situation still feels odd. There's a cloud of unknown when it comes to the severity of Carr's injury and if he will ever suit up for the Saints again.

Via Albert Breer, Carr has changed his mind at times this offseason. He's been making requests of the Saints on multiple occasions, including a raise and a trade.

"To review, there was a point in the offseason when Derek Carr wanted a raise, then a trade, and then the Saints unilaterally converted the great majority of his 2025 money from base salary to a signing bonus, which essentially locked him in with the team for the year," Breer said. "After that, news of the potential shoulder surgery—stemming from a ’23 injury—surfaced, and a lot of questions have followed (older quarterbacks generally have a lot of wear and tear on the throwing shoulder, and could use surgery)." — SI.com

This story with Carr and the Saints just keeps evolving. This is a player that has dealt with a plethora of injuries over the past couple of seasons, and his inconsistent play has held back New Orleans at times.

He does not seem to be happy to be a part of the organization any longer. The Saints just drafted a rookie QB in round two of the 2025 NFL Draft. Yet, he may start next season if he somehow returns from this mysterious injury. It is a head scratcher, truly.

Tyler Shough pick creates more drama for Saints

Kellen Moore took a gamble and selected Louisville QB Tyler Shough with the 40th overall pick. The new Saints head coach is confident in the rookie and loves his makeup to play meaningful football in the pros.

With the pick, New Orleans now has a QB trio of Spencer Rattler, Derek Carr, and Shough. Jake Haener and Ben DiNucci are both on the roster, too, but neither play into the starting role cards for next season.

The selection of Shough adds yet another layer to Moore's first season with the Saints.

Will he start Carr if the two sides can reconvene and the veteran QB gets healthy enough to start? Does Spencer Rattler get the first chance to start, following some live reps a season ago? Will Moore simply role with his new, intriguing option that he just spent valuable draft capital on in Week 1?

Those are all questions that will be answered in due time for the Saints. Regardless, Moore had his eye on the future during his first draft as an NFL head coach.
