The New Orleans Saints have a new offseason task when it comes to their staff. The front office will have to replace a staff member who has been around for over half of a decade in New Orleans.

Saints lose director of rehabilitation to Oklahoma

The Oklahoma Sooners program is hiring Jonathan Gress as its head football trainer, according to George Stoia III. Gress has been the director of rehabilitation for the Saints since 2019.

The hire is expected to be made official and announced on Thursday, June 12th.

Gress has spent quite some time in the NFL with multiple organizations. In 2014, Gress was hired as a physical therapist and assistant to the athletic trainer for the Miami Dolphins. Then, he joined the Saints in 2018 and grabbed a promotion the following year in New Orleans.

He is a Norman, Oklahoma native, so this is a return home for him as well. The move makes a ton of sense for him.

The hiring of Gress comes after OU did a full assessment of its football training staff during the 2024 season. According to sources, this assessment, which was conducted by a third party, was due to the abnormal number of injuries the Sooners suffered last season. One source inside the program told SoonerScoop, “The amount of injuries we sustained could not be ignored.” — On3.com

This is a blow to the recovery team for New Orleans. Gress was a well-respected piece of the staff, who will have to be replaced in some capacity. We will see who they decide to replace Gress with this offseason.
