The New Orleans Saints have plenty of off-season tasks to take care of in the coming months. They made a big decision today, though.
The Saints are choosing to not pick up the fifth-year option for offensive lineman Cesar Ruiz. That means that he will be playing for a new contract during this season.
For Ruiz, it is a tough reality for him. The offensive lineman has dealt with some injures, but his growth has been clear over the past couple of seasons. His first season with the Saints was a struggle, but he has come a long way.
Ruiz has had to fill in for multiple spots along the OL, including center and both guard spots. He has been noticeably more successful at guard, and that's where he will probably start this year. For the young lineman, his best football may be ahead of him.
Now, Ruiz has some added motivation for this season on the Saints. If he does have a successful season, the Saints will certainly have discussions with him about an extension at the end of the year.
