It can be easy to be harsh on the New Orleans Saints front office for their decision-making at times. Early in this offseason, though, they made a move that the rest of the NFL clearly understood.

Jamaal Williams remains unsigned in free agency

The signing of running back Jamaal Williams simply never worked for New Orleans. Williams was not efficient whatsoever out of the backfield for the Saints, and other teams around the NFL seemingly are not interested in him too much right now, either.

To begin the offseason, the Saints released Williams to clear cap space and open the door for younger options at RB. In 27 games with the Saints, Williams totaled just 470 rushing yards and averaged 3.1 yards per carry.

Williams hasn't been signed by another team. It is unknown how much interest there has been in the experienced runner during free agency. Williams is 30 years old. His 2022 season with the Detroit Lions was a clear outlier, as Williams scored seventeen touchdowns.

Saints add talent at RB with rookies

Devin Neal was one of the best value adds on day three of the 2025 NFL Draft. During his college career, he was one of the most productive running backs in the entire Big 12 conference.

Many draft analysts viewed Neal as one of the "value picks" in this year's RB class that was loaded with talent. All the selection costed the Saints was a sixth-round pick. If he can turn into the main backup for Alvin Kamara, that would be a great addition.

“I talked to them [the Saints] at the Senior Bowl. Coach Thomas (Saints’ running backs coach) was the offensive coordinator for me.

That connection is still there. We built a special bond. We get each other. We kind of click in that way, where we understand what each other is going to bring to the table. He’s a straight shooter, and I really enjoy that about him.”

Not to mention, Marcus Yarns is an intriguing undrafted free agent option that signed with New Orleans. He was a fantastic receiving threat out of the backfield during his college days, and his speed is a checked box for the pros.

The departure of Jamaal Williams really will not affect the offense for the Saints whatsoever going forward. Moving on from his contract was a good move for New Orleans earlier this offseason.
