Safety Justin Reid got involved in practice in a unique way earlier this week, but it could hold some value for New Orleans at some point.
Justin Reid kicks field goals in practice
The veteran safety is a talented player. He is one of the top safeties in the NFC now, and he's always been interested in kicking field goals. Reid got his first notable opportunity to do that during minicamp practice this week.
In the case of an emergency to Blake Grupe, do not be shocked to see Reid take some reps for the Saints. He has a history of doing exactly that during his time with the Kansas City Chiefs already in his career.
A reminder that Reid handled PATs and kickoffs for an injured Harrison Butker in 2022 and not only made 1-of-2, but even had a touchback. Chiefs won the game by 3.
Reid's versatility may reach even further than the defensive unit for the Saints. Hopefully, that won't be necessary. You never know in the NFL, though.
Mike Triplett shared that defensive tackle Davon Godchaux also had a go at trying a field goal during practice. It wasn't pretty, as you may expect from an NFL defensive lineman.
Kickers finding success at minicamp for Saints
The starting kicker [Grupe] for the Saints was perfect at minicamp practice earlier this week. He showed off his long field goal-kicking ability but didn't overlook the shorter attempts, either. That's notable.
Smyth has been impressive to begin practice outings in the kicking game as well. He has a huge leg, so longer field goals have actually not been a concern for the young boot.
Smyth was 5 for 6 on attempts during practice on Wednesday (including hitting on a 61-yarder), according to practice reports. — A to Z Sports
Ideally, we only see Reid kick during practice. If he's in a game, it means that Blake Grupe has most likely gotten hurt. Charlie Smyth, if he remains with the Saints, won't be active on a weekly basis most likely.
Regardless, it's nice to see the veteran defensive back enjoying himself with the Saints and Kellen Moore.
