The New Orleans Saints have an issue on their hand heading into the 2023 offseason, and boy is it a big one. They currently have $-54 million in cap space, per Spotrac.com.
That is a huge problem. Basically, they have no money to make moves and change things with their roster. They are basically screwed.
But, there is one thing that can help, and believe it or not, it starts in the offseason.
A lot of teams, to create cap space, are cutting players that make a ton of money, which only helps their cap space. The Saints could do that with one of their highest-paid players in Michael Thomas, who has a $13.5 million cap hit since he has played just 10 games in the last three seasons.
Now, a lot of you are thinking why would the Saints cut Thomas when he still may have a lot left in the tank? Sure, he probably does. But, he is expensive, he doesn't play a lot, and the Saints could get a great receiver in the draft to replace him, and probably give more production but for cheaper.
Plus the move would create more space. Well, the move would help the Saints get back to even, which I don't know if they can do.
That receiver they could draft is Ohio State receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who is very similar to Thomas in a lot of ways. Oh, and he played with Chris Olave in college, so there is that too.
Smith-Njigba was one of the best receivers in college football his entire time at Ohio State, and he could easily translate his game to the professionals.
The Ohio State receiver is primarily a slot guy, but can really play anywhere. His best trait is that he is so technical with everything. He is an elite route runner and can run every route in the tree.
If he needed anything to work on, which there really isn't anything he is bad at, it's his physical tools. He is athletic, yes, but he isn't the strongest guy in the world.
He would look great in black and gold, not to mention he would be playing next to his old running mate.
