The New Orleans Saints suffered a significant injury during training camp practice on Wednesday. Linebacker Andrew Dowell suffered a knee injury.
At the time, head coach Dennis Allen didn't think that it was a major issues, but later tests resulted in a different outcome for the linebacker. Dowell was projected to be the third linebacker on the depth chart for the Saints, but now, he will miss the entirety of the season. The Saints placed him on injured reserve.
As for the depth, New Orleans lacks that even more at linebacker now. Not to mention, Dowell was a key piece on special teams for the Saints over the last two seasons. Demario Davis and Pete Werners are the top two LBs, undoubtedly.
Behind them, a conglomeration of D'Marco Jackson, Nephi Sewell, Zack Baun, Anfernee Orji, and Nick Anderson sit there with opportunities ahead. Orji and Anderson are two rookies that will look to step up and earn a role on the defense and/or special teams for New Orleans.
According to reports, Anderson has made some strides so far in camp. That's intriguing and notable after the loss of Dowell. It is possible that one of or both Orji and Anderson could sneak onto the roster due to the need for bodies at LB that the Saints imply don't have right now.
Keep an eye on those two as they battle others for a role in New Orleans.
