The New Orleans Saints have an uphill climb. Instead of getting a win on Thursday night to show the world that they can play with the big cats in the NFC, they got embarrassed.
Now, they need to win out and get some help from a division rival. According to ESPN analytics, their chances at a playoff berth have plummeted over the last week of play.
The Saints now own an 11% chance to make the postseason and a 9% chance to win the NFC South and get a playoff berth.
Entering Thursday, the Saints held a 42% chance of getting into the playoffs. Clearly, those hopes are fading quickly for New Orleans.
In order to win the division, New Orleans must win on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers + have the Carolina Panthers beat the Bucs in Week 18.
Their playoff destiny no longer rests in their hands. They'll need to win against a red-hot Bucs team that already beat them once this season. Then, they'll need the NFC-worst Panthers to beat the current NFC South leader to close the year.
It's quite unlikely.
Regardless, Sunday is a massive game for the Saints. Playoffs seem like a long shot, but crazier things have happened.
If New Orleans loses on Sunday, their attention will turn towards staff changes and their roster management for the offseason.
