The New Orleans Saints have a plethora of different talent at quarterback right now. Derek Carr is their starter. They also drafted rookie Jake Haener and believe that he has intriguing upside for the future. So, where does that leave veteran Jameis Winston?
Winston could neve quite lock down the starting job in the long-term for the Saints. He is a solid option to have as a backup QB on the depth chart, though. Recent news from the AFC may tempt them to trade him for someone that could have an immediate impact on their offense, though. The Las Vegas Raiders have reportedly been shopping WR Hunter Renfrow.
Additionally, their new QB, Jimmy Garoppolo, has major medical red flags.
Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio broke the story on a surprise addendum to Garoppolo’s contract with Las Vegas which waives the risk of additional injury and risks, up to and including “permanent disability,” and which gives the Raiders the ability to cut Garoppolo without any salary cap ramifications. Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels acknowledged that Garoppolo may not be ready to practice with the team until training camp in late July, and they don’t exactly have a lot of enviable options to work with in the meantime — or the long run, if Garoppolo’s extensive injury history continues into the season. —
It may make sense for the Raiders to target an option like Winston. He has proved to be a capable starter when given legit options around him, but he has also had consistency issues. Regardless, no free-agent option would provide Las Vegas with the potential that Winston would in the short-term.
For the Saints, they could try to get Renfrow in return. Adding him to their slot on offense would really round out their skill position depth.
