Death. Taxes. The New Orleans Saints making salary cap magic happen during every NFL offseason in recent years. The 2024 offseason will be no different, and their biggest domino just fell in terms of contract restructuring.
The Saints are restructuring quarterback Derek Carr's contract, according to Jeremy Fowler. Their move is expected to save the team around $23 million in cap space.
At the start of February, a report emerged regarding the expected restructure for Carr. This move has been in the works, and New Orleans simply had to do it.
Due to their salary cap deficit, the Saints were going to have to restructure a plethora of veterans. Their QB was included. He's their most expensive player, and this move frees up quite a bit of space.
Carr's restructure will tie him to the organization for at least the next two seasons due to his dead cap number.
Earlier this week, reports regarding the expected salary cap number swirled. The total could be closer to $250 million that previously thought. That will be quite a jump, and the Saints can use all the help they can get. An official cap number is expected to be released sometime in March.
For now, the Saints will continue to make moves that free cap space. They can become cap compliant without cutting any major pieces from their roster. That being said, we will see how aggressive they are with their roster/contract decisions over the next couple of months.
