Preseason highlights always excite many folks. They’re the first taste of in-game action for fans’ favorite teams. For the New Orleans Saints, their overall production in their preseason games so far has been less than ideal. That being said, rookie Tyler Shough just added to his reel so far as he tries to win the quarterback competition for Kellen Moore.

Tyler Shough finds rookie tight end for huge gain

In his first start in the NFL, the rookie quarterback found fellow rookie Treyton Welch for an impressive throw and catch connection. Shough dropped in a nice pass and Welch made the catch in traffic, somehow holding on to the ball as he went to the ground.

Highlights like this one are ones that Kellen Moore will want to see from both players. The Saints are trying to decide their starting QB for Week 1, and tight end depth remains a notable concern to begin the season for New Orleans. Foster Moreau and Taysom Hill may both be on the shelf as they recover from last year’s injuries.

Shough’s stint in the game was a solid outing when you consider the players in around him. The Saints did start Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed, but the offensive line was missing multiple starters. That unit had some struggles in the first half, but the rookie quarterback managed the pressure pretty well and took care of the football.

Welch could be in the drivers seat to earn the final roster spot at the TE position.

Kendre Miller impresses early vs. Jags

The young backup RB for the Saints was also a bright spot. With limited running room in the first half, Miller broke tackles and found space for a couple of chunk gains. He ran hard, made defenders miss, and created some more manageable third down situations for New Orleans.

If Miller stays healthy, he seems locked into the RB2 spot behind Alvin Kamara for the Saints offense.
