Tyler Shough is creating some buzz. The first-year NFL quarterback made his second NFL start in Week 10 against the Carolina Panthers and earned a divisional victory in decisive fashion. From start to finish, Shough played with confidence but also understood how to take care of the football and set his offense up for success.

Kellen Moore made the correct decision to allow Tyler Shough to start for Saints

The Saints offense only scored seventeen points in Week 10, but the performance from the passing game felt night and day compared to recent, prior weeks for New Orleans. On third down today, Shough was 7 for 10 for 201 yards and two touchdowns. The Saints picked up six conversions in that span.

When it mattered most, Shough showed up – regardless of the pressure or play call from Carolina.

Shough discussed his performance and ways to improve going forward for New Orleans. He’s not settling, even after a game where the rookie looked comfortable, on time, and quite talented.

Nick Underhill relayed his thoughts on Shough’s performance after the game as well. I agree with his sentiment. The potential of Shough needed to be seen sometime this season. Even with a banged up OL and lackluster WR depth, give him a shot to prove something in year one. If you don’t, then he may never receive a true evaluation in New Orleans, and that cannot happen with the 40th overall pick in last year’s draft.

“Now, I’m not positive that Tyler Shough will end up being a better player over time than Spencer Rattler. But I think what we thought in camp is still true today: Shough has a higher ceiling. He puts air into the balloon. He creates possibility. All of those things also mean he could crash much harder than Rattler ever would.” — Nick Underhill, NewOrleans.Football

It was a nice experience for the Saints and their fans in Week 10. They nerves didn’t seem to get to Shough, and other impact talent like Alvin Kamara and Chris Olave were impressive, too. They’re playing with energy, and that’s all you can ask for at 2-8 on the season.

Let’s see if Shough can build on this game and keep proving the doubters wrong down the stretch this season.
