Saints sign veteran Dante Pettis to practice squad
Pettis is a wide receiver and kick returner. Pettis is a veteran, sure-handed target for depth on offense. He also has legitimate special teams experience as well.
In five seasons with the 49ers, New York Giants, and the Chicago Bears, he has appeared in 50 games with 19 starts, recording 71 receptions for 984 yards (13.9 avg.) with 12 touchdowns. Pettis also handled punt return duties with his three previous teams, returning 31 punts for 204 yards. During his last game action in 2022, Pettis appeared in all 17 games for the Bears with seven starts, recording 19 receptions for 245 yards with three touchdowns and returned 18 punts for 163 yards.
The Saints' corresponding move was releasing cornerback Shemar Jean-Charles from the practice squad.
Shaheed injury uncertainty
Of course, this move sheds light on Rashid Shaheed. On Monday evening, news broke regarding the star returner's knee injury. Shaheed suffered the injury late in the game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 6.
Shaheed has been arguably the top receiver for the Saints this season. He's had a key downfield connection with Derek Carr. Not to mention, he has outproduced Chris Olave this season, too.
As for the return game, Shaheed is a former All-Pro returner. He returned a punt for a touchdown against Tampa Bay last weekend that gave the team a jolt in the first half.
If he is forced to miss time, New Orleans could be without Shaheed and Olave against the Denver Broncos in Week 7. Olave suffered a concussion in Week 6 and remains in concussion protocol.
Signing Pettis could point to clear uncertainty regarding Shaheed going forward.
Saints could catch a massive break that will help them beat Sean Payton’s Broncos to get back on track
Would help them on offense.
