The decision allows teams to place players in free agency and also gives them the chance to spread out the salary cap costs over the current year and the next. Saints are pushing cap costs into the future with Winston release
Winston signed with the Cleveland Browns in free agency.
The veteran quarterback will still count against the cap by $3.38 million in 2024 and $7.3 million in 2025. The Saints will receive a cap credit of $1.21 million on June 2.
The move by New Orleans gave them flexibility to add depth during free agency as well as give them some relief during the summer when they may want to add more veteran talent.
Not to mention, they had to sign their 2024 NFL Draft class and undrafted free agents. They've signed their entire class.
Winston started ten games in four years with the Saints. His performances were a mixed bag of outcomes, but he was a key piece to their locker room and an emotional leader.
