The New Orleans Saints did not get the job done in their 20-19 loss to the Washington Commanders. A slow offensive start blitzed their chances, but the defensive performance in the second half helped them have a chance for a comeback.
Ultimately, that fell short with a failed two-point conversion in the closing seconds. Regardless, one of their biggest issues, defensive line play, was actually a strength in the loss.
Saints get sacks
New Orleans recorded a whopping eight sacks in their Week 15 loss to the Commanders. Chase Young and Cameron Jordan played with fire, and Carl Granderson had a nice game as well.
Jordan had some legit praise for current defensive line coach Brian Young. He took over after the firing of Dennis Allen.
Not to mention, the sacks came against one of the most mobile quarterbacks in the football in Jayden Daniels. He's not easy to get to. Sometimes when you do, he forces you to do it again on the same play.
It was a nice sight to see New Orleans find success in forcing negative plays against a QB with running upside. That has not been the case in recent years, as fans may remember.
The unit has played with notably more fire over the past handful of games. That is no coincidence. They clearly needed a chance in the staff, and the front office finally made that choice.
Will this sort of production continue? Doubtful. Expecting five or more sacks from a defensive line is a fairly unlikely task to handle. That being said, the effort cannot be undermined or disrespected on the DL right now.
