Earlier in the week, the New Orleans Saints reportedly arranged a workout with an Irish kicker. That does not happen particularly often, but New Orleans had clear interest. On Friday, they reportedly got a deal done with him, too.

The Saints are signing NFL IPP athlete Charlie Smyth as competition at kicker.

Smyth is known for his massive leg. No, not physically – but his boot can nail 60+ yard field goals. He's proven that multiple times on film.

Smyth is the first Irishman to sign a pro contract though the international program.

The addition of the Irishman increased the pressure on young kicker Blake Grupe. He was inconsistent as a rookie in 2023 and hasn't proven to be a reliable option from 55+ yards. The Saints did not test him often in those scenarios, either.

No matter what – Smyth is an intriguing piece to the puzzle for the Saints heading into 2024.
