The Saints had some tough decisions to make this week during roster cuts. Wide receiver/running back hybrid Kirk Merritt got released earlier this week. Luckily, the Saints signed him to their practice squad today.
Merritt absolutely deserves the opportunity. He played well in the preseason and provides depth at multiple positions. He can also play on special teams. His versatility provides value on the depth chart, and coaches have raved about him.
He probably won't get an opportunity on the active roster unless an injury or two occurs at running back or wide receiver. That being said, don't be shocked if a team tries to make a move for him while he is on the practice squad. The Saints must be prepared for that.
Regardless, you should always reward the hardest workers in the room. Merritt was consistently that throughout the offseason, and the Saints may want to get him involved on the active roster down the road this season.
