Safety has been a position of need for the New Orleans Saints during this offseason. Veteran depth was a must, and the front office just made a smart move on that front.

The Saints are signing former Detroit Lions DB Will Harris.

Safety was a position of need entering the draft. The value of the position did not line up with where the Saints picked in the first three rounds, though. Overall, the class lacked upside at the position.

Following the draft, they had to address safety. Tyrann Mathieu and Jordan Howden are projected starters, but the depth is not up to par. Johnathan Abram played well in limited snaps last season, but his role is limited on defense.

With Harris, they have a veteran presence who hey can trust in coverage. In 2022, Harris recorded a 63.7 coverage grade via Pro Football Focus. Last season, Harris struggled in a new role with Detroit. He played mostly cornerback for the Lions in 2023, but expect the Saints to put him back at safety.

His best play came during 2020-2022 when he was a linebacker/safety hybrid type of defender.

Harris is still just 28 years old.
