The New Orleans Saints lost in a very tough way Sunday to the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 6. They led nearly the entire game. Then, boom, the Bengals come out of nowhere to take a lead. We know how it happened and the things that transpired before, but it was just a shocking way to end a game the Saints were playing so well in.
To start the game the Saints were already at a disadvantage, even at home. They were missing a ton of starters due to injury, and no one had them beating the team that just made a Super Bowl appearance. And they almost proved everyone wrong, until they proved them right.
It started with the shanked punt, then the big play from the Bengals. The Bengals ultimately won the game on that play.
When star safety Tyrann Mathieu was asked about what happened on that miraculous play by Joe Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase, he kept it real.
"Two missed tackles, and you know, touchdown," Mathieu said. "You know it is really simple."
And that is exactly what happened in the play. Chase ran a route to the flat. Burro hit him. Bradley Roby missed the first tackle. Mathieu missed the second. Touchdown. It really is that simple.
In just a matter of minutes, the game was flipped upside down, and the Saints were staring at a loss, again. I'm sure it was a tough pill to swallow.
"Yeah I mean, listen, I think it hurts. Anytime you lose in this league, it hurts," Mathieu told reporters. "You know, but the last couple of weeks we have had double-digit leads, and we just have to find a way to kind of put teams away. I think the most important thing is just for us to continue to stick together. I think we have a good group, so I think we will be alright in the end but just have to find a way to finish these games."
The Saints are now looking at a short week, as they will play the Arizona Cardinals on the road on Thursday Night Football. Both teams are 2-4, and both teams will be looking to get a win. Hopefully, the Saints are the one that comes out on top, though.
