The New Orleans Saints made arguably their smartest move of the offseason so far on Thursday. They re-signed star safety Tyrann Mathieu to a two-year extension. It helped their cap space situation and kept an important defender around.

For Mathieu, he wants to leave a legacy in New Orleans for his work on and off the field. He loves the community and has been a consistent contributor in the city.

Mathieu says that he is 'hopeful' that he will retire with the Saints when his career comes to a close.

That being said, he is focused on winning for now – not retiring. He knows that he can still perform at a high level in the league.

Mathieu leads the team in interceptions over the past two years with seven.

He is also an emotional leader beside Demario Davis for the New Orleans defense. His play has been consistent for most of the past two seasons, too.

Of course, he also played college ball at LSU. He has been a beam of light for fans around New Orleans for quite some time, even when he did not play for the black and gold to begin his NFL career. Regardless, the fans have made a major impact on him, and he feels blessed to play in New Orleans.

The Saints are lucky to have Mathieu as a key piece of their organization on and off the field.
