The New Orleans Saints offense has been gleaming confidence in recent weeks under new OC Klint Kubiak. Players like the new scheme and expect improvement. That doesn't mean that the Saints are done looking for upgrades in the talent department, though.

Could New Orleans target another reciever/tight end to compete for a roster spot in training camp and the preseason? One former fourth-round pick makes some sense. He recently dominated the UFL.

Saints should sign UFL star Hakeem Butler

Butler was named 2024 UFL Offensive Player of the Year. He was one of the best players in the league throughout their spring season.

He probably deserves another shot in the league, and the Saints make a ton of sense for him. He's a towering pass catcher at 6'4, and New Orleans lost Michael Thomas during this offseason. He has not signed yet, but a return to the Saints seems unlikely.

Butler is a big body that can make plays on jump balls. The Saints have been looking at multiple receivers of Butler's type during this offseason, including rookie Bub Means.

If they brought in Butler, he would probably be competing with Stanley Morgan Jr. and Equanimeous St. Brown for one of the final spots on the WR depth chart. If they chose to see him at tight end, he could provide depth behind Juwan Johnson and Foster Moreau. Taysom Hill is technically a TE, but his usage is much more unique.

Former NFL head coach Wade Phillips now coaches in the UFL. After the championship game, he had a gleaming review for Butler on live TV. He is advocating for him to get another chance in the NFL.

I’m going to tell everybody in the NFL that I talk to that you need to be playing,”

We will see if the Saints, or other NFL teams, show interest in Butler over the coming weeks. His spring season could launch him into a new chance for the fall and beyond in the pros.

Butler is a former fourth-round pick in 2019. He was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals but never played for them. He has played in just two NFL games, both with the Philadelphia Eagles. Butler does not have a reception in the NFL yet.
