The New Orleans Saints have navigated an uphill climb during their offseason. Everyone discusses their cap situation on an annual basis, and it was another tall task in 2024. They've created a chunk of space while also addressing some needs in free agency.
After signing their entire rookie class, it's a bit clearer now much cap space the Saints have. Plus, they received some cap relief due to the post-June 1st cuts of Michael Thomas and Jameis Winston. Some restructures along the way have helped immensely, too.
How much cap space does New Orleans have before training camp begins?
The Saints are projected just over $12 million in cap space as of now.
That figure is via OverTheCap.
That number ranks 22nd in the NFL. They've risen the ranks due to some notable restructures. The latest deal reworked was with Taysom Hill.
The Saints restructured the contract of TE Taysom Hill, converting $8.79 million of salary into a signing bonus and creating $6.59 million in the process. Hill’s 2025 salary cap number will increase by $2.19 million to $17.986 million. There is now $9.7 million in void year salary cap charges that are set to hit the salary cap in 2026 if Hill’s contract voids.
This marks the third year in a row that the Saints have restructured Hill’s contract for cap relief. The team converted $9 million in 2022, $8.8 million in 2023, and now $8.79 million in 2024. If released next year the Saints would face a dead money charge of $17.7 million due to all of the restructures. — OverTheCap
The Saints were way behind the eight-ball to start the offseason. That being said, that's nothing new. They've began the past handful of offseasons that way, and their front office has made moves to become cap compliant.
Let's see if New Orleans uses some of that space for more veteran depth or give Alvin Kamara a reworked deal that he began a holdout for at the end of mandatory minicamp. The Saints could do both. Only time will tell.
New Orleans could also just keep their increased space in their back pocket in case of a trade/signing during the season. The Saints could even keep it for it to roll over to next offseason.
Falcons coach goes off on Saints after late touchdown in big win
The New Orleans Saints got the job done in a big way in Week 18. They dominated their biggest division rival in the Atlanta Falcons, 48-17. With the win, they stayed alive in the NFC playoff race. At the end of the game, there was some drama, though. Up 41-17, the Saints scored another touchdown […]
