The New Orleans Saints got officially eliminated from playoff contention in Week 17.
They defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in an impressive performance, but other teams did them no favors. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Carolina Panthers to secure the NFC South crown.
The Saints had a chance to get a wild card spot next week until the Minnesota Vikings lost to the Green Bay Packers.
Now, the Saints are in a spot that they haven't been in in quite a while.
They are playing a meaningless game for they playoff hopes for the first time since the first day of January in 2017.
It has been a frustrating campaign for the Saint sunder Dennis Allen this year.
Fans and the front office had playoff aspirations this season. They were some folks' dark horse pick to make a playoff run in the NFC. Many felt like they were the favorite to win the division alongside Tampa Bay, too.
They came up just short.
These next few months will be interesting for the Saints.
Without having to worry about the postseason, their focus will probably shift to Sean Payton. How much will they be able to trade him for if they do decide to deal him this off-season? He is interested in a return to coaching, according to reports.
The Saints do not have their first-round pick this year in the NFL Draft. They don't know who their starting quarterback will be next season. The salary cap is tight once again.
There are a lot of variables for New Orleans right now.
Today's events go to show how crazy stuff happens in the NFL, so wins are at a premium. A couple more early-season closeouts by the Saints would have them back atop the NFC South.
Instead, they are playing a game without playoff hopes for the first time in half of a decade.
