The New Orleans Saints have done one very well over the last three seasons, play defense. However, they took some pretty big hits to the unit.
Defensive tackles David Onyemata and Shy Tuttle as well as edge rusher Marcus Davenport signed with new teams once the free agency period initially kicked. New Orleans didn't sit on their hands in the aftermath, though.
Khalen Saunders and Nathan Shepherd were signed to plug up the interior of the defensive line plus the Saints drafted Bryan Bresee and Isaiah Foskey. But they haven't been satisfied enough to stop looking for more reinforcements as New Orleans brought in former undrafted free agent Kyle Phillips for a visit on Monday.
Phillips went down with an undisclosed injury in 2021. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to sign with a team last season, but judging by the Saints bringing him in, his injury woes are in the past.
During his three seasons in the NFL, Phillips hasn't specialized in getting after the quarterback with just 2.5 sacks, but he has done a very good job setting the edge in the run game which no defense can have enough of.
Phillips has solid athleticism to go along with the 277 pounds he carries on a 6'4" frame and would be an intriguing piece to add to a defense that should be good again in 2023.
Saints to host former Pro Bowler on Monday
They need depth desperately.
