The NFL offseason is always intriguing. Changes, adjustments, comments. All of those aspects of NFL squads rise to the top.
Being on the roster bubble can be difficult, and position battles will truly begin to rev up over the next few months around the league. For the New Orleans Saints, they have a notable situation on their defensive line when it comes to roster cuts before the 2024 season.
A to Z Sports' Mike Payton revealed a list of one potential cut candidate for each of the 32 NFL teams.
Pass rusher Isaiah Foskey could be the Saints' surprise cut
I detailed a quick explanation for Payton earlier this week.
Foskey is just 23 years old and was a second-round pick during last year’s draft. There’s no way he should have to worry about his roster spot, right?
That’s not the case. The Saints added Chase Young off the edge during free agency. The second-year edge rusher missed a chunk of 2023 due to injury and played mostly on special teams when healthy. He’s proven little at the NFL level. It’s possible that one of Foskey or former first-rounder Payton Turner don’t make the cut by the time the season rolls around for New Orleans.
Foskey is a piece that the Saints staff hoped could make an impact in year one. That was not the case. He played in just ten games, totaling nine tackles and one pass deflection. A bulk of his reps were on special teams. That's not ideal for as second-round edge rusher.
Regardless, there is still hope as he will be just 23 at the start of the 2024 season. That being said, the Saints added Chase Young during free agency, and he could see a starting role alongside Cameron Jordan and/or Carl Granderson.
Behind them, a mixture of Foskey, Payton Turner, and Niko Lalos will battle for the final spots along the edge rusher position for New Orleans.
Turner has proven the most so far in his pro career, but injuries have plagued the former first-round pick, too. Turner has played in just fifteen games over the past three years with the Saints.
Foskey will feel some pressure as a part of the 2024 roster bubble.
As a recent day two pick, he may get the benefit of the doubt, but he must show his value to the Saints staff during training camp and the preseason. Additionally, he must stay available for New Orleans' defense.

Well deserved.
