Saints add former first-round QB to create more competition for Spencer Rattler behind Tyler Shough in 2026
The Saints got deeper at QB this week.
Kellen Moore is not settling with his quarterback room. The New Orleans Saints are infusing their QB room, behind Tyler Shough, with a bit of upside and competition for backup Spencer Rattler.
Saints sign former first-round QB Zach Wilson
New Orleans is signing quarterback Zach Wilson, according to Nick Underhill. Wilson spent last season with the Miami Dolphins. He was the no.2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft by the New York Jets.
Wilson will join a QB room that lost Jake Haener earlier this offseason. Haener signed with the Kansas City Chiefs. In five seasons in the pros, Willson has thrown for 6,325 yards and 23 touchdowns, but he’s also totaled 25 interceptions while completing 57% of his pass attempts.
Intriguing competition for Spencer Rattler with starting experience
Rattler began last season as the starter in New Orleans but lost the job during the middle of the season to the rookie Shough. The young quarterbacks battled it out ahead of the season opener, with Rattler winning the job.
Once the offense hit consistent bumps in the road, however, Moore turned to Shough to see what he had in the rookie, and it paid off in a major way. Shough became a legitimate rookie of the year candidate in the NFC – pushing Rattler to a bit of the background.
Now, entering year two of Shough, Rattler has the upper hand to be his backup, but Wilson provides experience and a clear pedigree from his days as a draft prospect. All in all, this will only force both backup options to put in as much work as possible and strive to do the job that the Saints ask of them.
New Orleans’ attention is certainly on helping Shough as much as possible to give him a chance to succeed as their long-term starting QB.
