But, the 2021 retiree may not be done with coaching, yet. In a recent report by NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Payton may return to coach if he receives an offer from either the Chargers or the Rams.
Additionally, Jeff Duncan of NOLA.com reports that Payton returning to New Orleans to coach the Saints also is possible.
As things stand, Payton is based in Los Angeles and is working for Fox.
There is no guarantee any of the LA jobs will open up. Chargers head coach Brandon Staley is in his second season with the team and has the chance to make the playoffs with a strong finish.
The Rams (4-9), despite a disappointing performance this year are coming off a Super Bowl.
Payton is still under contract in New Orleans. Any team that hires him would need to trade for his rights. Adding credence to the idea that Payton may be back on the Saints' sideline before we know it.
