The New Orleans Saints have become quite popular when it comes to salary cap discussions over the years. With a bit of a rebuild in the works, making long-term commitments with restructures and reconfigures probably won’t be as often of an action for their front office.

That being said, a fan favorite is lending an assist once again by working out a way for the Saints to earn some cap savings within his deal.

Taysom Hill restructures contract again

According to Nick Underhill, the utility weapon for New Orleans is helping out the team once again with his contract. The reworking by Hill has reportedly created about $3.6 million in cap savings for the Saints. Underhill also noted that this is not a restructure to head towards retirement for Hill.

“There’s been a lot of noise about Hill dating back over the last few months. This is because he’s 35 years old and is in the final year of his four-year, $40 million deal. He’s coming off of a serious injury and as of right now it isn’t clear when he will be able to return to the field. A timeline has not been given.” — Sports Illustrated

Saints may look for secondary depth in free agency

New Orleans lost Julian Blackmon after just one game due to a torn labrum. He’s expected to get surgery that ends his season, and that’s a notable loss for the defense. Blackmon was added late in the offseason, once Tyrann Mathieu announced his retirement from the NFL. The veteran safety quickly got onboard and had a couple nice plays in Week 1.

Alas, the Saints may have to return to the safety market. They have limited bodies at the position, and Jonas Sanker, a rookie, is the top candidate to start with Justin Reid now. Jordan Howden is also in the fold, but he was inactive to start the year with an injury.

Taysom’s decision may help the Saints add another experienced piece on the back end. We will see how active the Saints will be this week.
