The New Orleans Saints have had an identity for years and years.
They get the ball into their playmakers' hands early on often. For whatever reason, that identity has disappeared this season. One of their best talents, Alvin Kamara, has not seen nearly enough opportunities for the offense.
In past seasons, the screen play has been vital for the Saints. Sean Payton and the coaching staff knew that the offensive line and pass-catchers could succeed often on those play calls.
The confidence in the screen play is gone. Pete Carmichael Jr. and company do not believe that the play is as useful as it once was for the Saints, clearly.
This season, the Saints have completed five passes to running backs on screen plays. Those completions have totaled 42 yards. Only three of the five have been thrown to Kamara.
During Sean Payton's time as head coach, there were times when the Saints would throw three or four screens per game to their shifty running backs.
Now, the Saints don't trust the play, and it doesn't make much sense. They have the talent to call that play and at times, it has worked well. We have seen multiple wide receiver screen plays go for big gains to players like Chris Olave and Rashid Shadeed.
The Saints no longer have Sean Payton or Drew Brees.
That being said, they should not simply forget some of the plays that brought them so much success with them.
Talent shines through, and Alvin Kamara is not getting enough chances to help the team score more points.
