Every good thing must come to an end.

And the New Orleans Saints preseason comes to a close on Friday against the Los Angeles Chargers at the Caesars Superdome. This game marks the last exhibition game fringe roster guys have at making the 53-man roster, and many still vying for those slots hope to at least hang on to a practice squad roster slot.

So, ahead of Friday's final preseason bout, let's take a look at three players who will be playing for something against the Chargers.

Wide receiver: Kirk Merritt

Kirk Merrit has played the second-most snaps at his position (71) through offense (47) and special teams (24), with only Kawaan Baker seeing a larger workload throughout the preseason.

Merrit is currently pushing Tre’Quan Smith (44 snaps, all on offense) and Marquez Callaway (38 snaps, 5 of them on special teams) for the sixth receiver spot and a strong performance may help his case.

A good game on Friday night could assure him a spot in New Orleans' crowded wide receiver room. However, regardless of a plausible solid performance, he may find himself on the practice squad, nonetheless.

Cornerback: DaMarcus Fields

As an undrafted rookie out of Texas Tech, DaMarcus Fields is one of four players to see more than 100 combined snaps in two exhibition games.

Throughout the preseason, Fields hasn't given up a catch for more than 15 yards. And in total, he has been targeted 8 times and allowed 4 receptions for 25 yards and two touchdowns.

Throughout the preseason, the Saints have played Fields often, however, he still needs a strong performance for a shot at a practice squad spot.

Quarterback: Ian Book

Ian Book hasn't impressed throughout the preseason. And Friday may mark his last opportunity to impress the coaching staff.

It's unrealistic to expect Book to make the 53-man roster. However, a shot at a practice squad spot is up for grabs.

Yet, if he continues to struggle, it's easy to see New Orleans' coaching staff choosing to punt on the Book project and opt to develop a younger — and better — quarterback soon.
