Tyler Shough pick breaks massive streak for Saints
With the selection of Shough at 40th overall, the Saints broke a streak that dates back to 1971. That was the last time they spent a first or second-round pick on a quarterback. That QB was Archie Manning.
Shough enters the depth chart for Kellen Moore's offense, with a shot to win the starting job as a rookie. He's an experienced college passer and was very well-respected by NFL coaching staffs following his itnerviews ahead of this year's draft.
Shough is an older prospect at 25 years old. He's unique in that way, following a lengthy college career – at multiple schools. He was once Justin Herbert's backup for the Oregon Ducks. Shough then made stops at Texas Tech and Louisville.
Shough has a live arm and a prototypical NFL build for a quarterback, also testing very well at the NFL Scouting Combine with a 4.63-second 40-yard dash. He's able to manipulate his arm angle and make throws to all parts of the field, leading a Cardinals offense that averaged 36.6 points per game last season. On the flip side, Shough's age and injury history were concerns for some NFL teams, and he's guilty of trying to fit balls into tight windows that can lead to turnovers. — Kevin Patra, NFL.com
We will see if Moore's first QB selection in the draft works out. He took a chance on a prospect that was quite polarizing, entering this year's draft. Moore believes in Shough.
