Who can blame him?
ESPN's Field Yates first reported that the veteran tight end agreed to renegotiate his contract with the New Orleans Saints on Wednesday. The most significant change was a pay cut.
Vannett’s base salary will go from $2.6 million to $1.035 million, yielding $1.55 million in salary cap space.
The deal comes after it was rumored Vannett could be cut or traded at the deadline for 53-men rosters. Meaning that the most likely scenario was it was either take a pay cut or play somewhere else.
Vannett is the loan blocking tight end in a position full of pass-catchers on the Saints' roster. Adam Trautman will see the majority of the snaps. Taysom Hill and Juwan Johnson will be involved in the passing game.
And Vannett will be asked to do what he does best this season — block.
Though he had to renegotiate his contract, Vannett doing so tells everyone that he is still an integral part of what New Orleans aims to do moving forward this season.
Besides, New Orleans isn't hurting for cap space. Now, the team will have him as a resource on the roster but on a cheaper price tag.
