The New Orleans Saints have a new starting kicker. It's Blake Grupe. That doesn't mean that Wil Lutz is forgotten, though. The Saints traded Lutz to the Denver Broncos on Tuesday.
Sean Payton got his kicker from a position of his time in New Orleans back. There's no question that the two of them hold a tight relationship, and Lutz explained what it meant to him for his former HC to make a deal for him.
Lutz was clearly grateful for his time in New Orleans, but he is excited for a fresh start. He joins a plethora of other former Saints as players that Payton has grabbed since he got to Denver.
It's worth noting that Lutz made it clear that the Broncos HC went after him aggressively, so the kicker probably knew some of the negotiating going on during the process. He also discussed why he had so much success in New Orleans under Payton.
“I believe that’s why I had my best years with him. I didn’t want to let him down.” — Lutz on Payton
For the Saints, they are happy to have a young kicker that they believe has a high ceiling. There is certainly no animosity from them towards Lutz. The long-time boot for New Orleans is grateful for over half of a decade with the organization.
