Giants star caught on camera exploding over coaching decision that cost New York the game vs. Broncos
Thew New York Giants made an inexcusable coaching mistake on defense against the Denver Broncos.
The New York Giants fell to the Denver Broncos 33-32 in the final seconds of Week 7. The game appeared to be a dominant victory for New York until a historic fourth-quarter collapse.
The Giants squandered a 19-point lead they held heading into the fourth quarter, allowing the Broncos to rip off 33 points. Defensively, the team appeared to have the game in control until they decided to completely take their foot off the gas for the final quarter. Defensive coordinator Shane Bowen decided to play ultra-conservatively, which helped the Broncos surge back into the game.
Bowen has come under fire multiple times for his poor play-calling, especially in late-game situations. Today’s loss featured a baffling decision to drop eight players into coverage and allow a similar completion to the one that cost them against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 2. With 33 seconds to go after the Giants retook the lead, Bo Nix connected with Marvin Mims up the middle of the field.
That decision to allow Nix to sit in the pocket and easily find an open man was heavily criticized by the Giants’ fan base after the loss. Apparently, the fans aren’t the only ones upset by the mistake.
Brian Burns caught yelling about a late coaching decision
Defensive leader Brian Burns had a fantastic game, registering two sacks to add to his Defensive Player of the Year campaign. After the game, he was captured expressing his frustration with the call that allowed the Broncos to win the game. Burns can be heard yelling, “That stupid a** s**t. Dropping 8 in coverage,” while limping toward the locker room.
Per SNY’s Connor Hughes, members of the locker room were notably frustrated by the late-game defensive play-calling. Burns even briefly mentioned the decision to drop eight players into coverage, but would not expand further.
The most insane aspect of the defensive collapse was that through the first three quarters, it appeared that the Giants’ defense was finally playing up to its top-five potential. Bowen was establishing an argument for how he’s turned his unit around. Instead, that final call will haunt him and could be what costs him his job soon.
In total, the Giants’ defense surrendered 407 total yards, 265 yards passing, and 142 yards rushing. Most of those yards were compiled in the fourth quarter, but the short time span of the Broncos’ offensive success only worsens the situation.
While it’s uncertain how much longer Brian Daboll will get to lead this franchise, they at the very least need to let Bowen go this week. Multiple players on defense would be top 10 in the NFL at their respective positions, and the group is performing like a bottom-five squad. Additionally, if a leader like Burns is voicing his displeasure with the operation, it could be too far gone for the players to be bought in for the coming weeks.
