Giants finally fire DC Shane Bowen — So who will take over as New York’s Defensive Coordinator?
Who will be the New York Giants defensive coordinator now that they’ve fired Shane Bowen?
The New York Giants finally made the move to fire defensive coordinator Shane Bowen, the team announced on Monday morning. This move comes after the Giants led 27-24 in the fourth quarter against the Detroit Lions yesterday, and inevitably lost in overtime on a 69-yard rushing touchdown from Jahmyr Gibbs.
Why did the Giants fire Shane Bowen?
Firing Bowen was a decision that many Giants fans were clamoring for all the way back in September. Numerous inexplicable blown leads later, he was finally relieved of his duties after producing one of the worst defenses in the NFL.
The indecision to fire Bowen was one of the factors that led to Brian Daboll losing his job a few weeks ago. Bowen’s unaggressive play calling was holding back a unit that had the potential to be disruptive and dangerous. After Daboll was fired, it was perplexing that Bowen still kept his job, given how poorly he had done.
After 12 games under Bowen, the Giants sat at 30th in total yards per game allowed, 3oth in points per game allowed, 23rd in pass yards per game allowed, and 32nd in rush yards per game allowed. With a unit featuring numerous Pro Bowlers and former first-round picks, it was incredibly frustrating to watch opposing offenses consistently gash them.
Aside from the underperformance, the timing of the firing was necessary out of principle. The Giants fan base is relatively checked out, mainly because the organization committed way too much time to the current regime that would clearly never succeed. To force fans to watch more awful defensive performances would have been a sign of apathy from the organization.
Who is the new Giants defensive coordinator?
Taking over for Bowen as the team’s defensive coordinator will be Charlie Bullen, the Giants’ outside linebackers coach. Considering the outside linebackers/pass rushers are the only productive and successful unit on the Giants, it makes sense that he’s earned a shot to prove what he’s capable of.
According to the Giants’ website, Bullen has been in coaching for 18 years, with twelve being spent in the NFL. From 2012 to 2019, Bullen served as an assistant defensive position coach for the Miami Dolphins and Arizona Cardinals. He became the Cardinals’ primary outside linebackers coach in 2020 and held the role until 2022.
Bullen has been a member of the Giants’ staff since 2024 and has been a key catalyst in the Giants’ pass rush, which ranks among the best in the NFL. Notably, Bullen has never been a defensive playcaller, so this will be his first real opportunity. Hopefully, some of that success can translate to defensive success in the final weeks of the season.
