The New York Giants fell to the Detroit Lions in overtime, 34-27, with yet another blown lead. While it’s easy to be frustrated by the poor defensive performance, praise is due to the Giants’ offense.

Entering the game, the Lions’ defense was fifth in total yards allowed. Despite the massive challenge, Mike Kafka’s offense still managed 517 total yards with limited weapons and a backup quarterback.

Additionally, Giants fans were blessed with an unbelievable play by backup quarterback Jameis Winston that perfectly encapsulated his impact on the team. A perfectly ridiculous trick play resulted in Winston contorting to catch a pass from kick returner/wide receiver Gunner Olszewski, breaking a tackle, and barrelling into the end zone.

Winston was vocal after the game about how he feels Kafka is doing a tremendous job filling in as the interim head coach.

“He’s been doing phenomenal,” Winston told reporters. “He’s an excellent head coach, he’s poised, he’s confident. We have to help him out, myself included.”

Giants’ pass game shines in frustrating loss

In a season with little to root for, getting to watch Winston inject energy into the offense has been electric. As it’s likely Jaxson Dart returns soon and Winston heads back to the bench, you can’t help but feel pride for Winston taking advantage of his opportunity to play over the last two games. In the loss, he finished with 366 passing yards, three total touchdowns, and one interception.

It absolutely hasn’t been perfect, and there have been plenty of typical Winston mistakes that have turned into sacks and turnovers. But the unique and entertaining highs make you smile during a season that has made every Giants fan miserable. Winston became the levity that fans didn’t even know they needed.

After the game, Winston shared a powerful message on perseverance.

“Success is in the struggle,” Winston stated. “We just have to find a way to win. It’s as simple as that. I have to do my role better. We all have a part in this.”

Winston isn’t the only offensive player who had a stellar performance. WR Wan’Dale Robinson exploded for 156 yards on nine catches with one touchdown. Recent addition Isaiah Hodgins had two solid catches, finishing with 42 yards and an impressive touchdown. Tight end Theo Johnson also made impactful plays, finishing with three catches and 77 yards.

After the loss, Kafka praised the massive game from Robinson.

“He’s a very talented player, and you just let him go. And he made some big-time plays for us. Again, tough kid, battled through taking some big hits,” Kafka told the media. “This kid continues to just keep on coming back and fighting. He’s a guy I can just go to war with every single week.”

Robinson’s stellar day is promising for the offense’s future as they prepare to shape it around Dart. Hopefully, he and the other Giants’ young playmakers can finish the year with multiple similar performances to build momentum heading into 2026.
