The New York Giants quarterback situation couldn't have been much crazier. Not only has Daniel Jones been benched, but he was also demoted to QB4, behind Tommy DeVito, Drew Lock, and recently-signed Tim Boyle.
Now, backup Drew Lock added another point to the conversation. Asked about how he's handled the fact that he is not going to start after being the immediate backup the entire season, Lock expressed his frustration about the decision.
"That's a question that I might still have for myself. It was expressed to me that I was going to be the 2. Interesting situation," Lock pointed out. "Not much I can really say about it besides I'm gonna be here for him (DeVito) and we are still communicating, still very good friends, believe it or not."
The Giants' decision is, in fact, interesting. Back in the offseason, the team gave Lock a one-year, $5 million contract to be the backup. He appeared in only two games, completing three of eight passes for six yards. Now that Jones has been benched, Lock could finally have the opportunity to start — but head coach Brian Daboll went in another direction.
A second-round pick by the Denver Broncos in 2019, Drew Lock has started 23 NFL games in his career — 21 for the Broncos and two for the Seattle Seahawks last year, when starter Geno Smith got hurt.
Right now, Tommy DeVito, Drew Lock, and Daniel Jones are on the 53-man roster, while Tim Boyle has been signed to the practice squad. However, at practice, Boyle had the snaps after DeVito and Lock.
The Giants are protecting themselves, because if Daniel Jones gets hurt and can't pass a physical in March, he will gain additional $23 million in guarantees. Jones is in the second season of a four-year, $160 million contract extension. Presumably, he will get cut before the fifth day of the 2025 NFL League Year, so new guarantees don’t kick in.
Drew Lock will be an unrestricted free agent in 2025. Tommy DeVito is slated to be an exclusive rights free agent, which means the Giants can keep him with a small tender, and he will be a restricted free agent in 2026.
